National Action Agenda on Elder Abuse

National Summit on Elder Abuse 2001
A Call for Action

In December 2001, the National Center on Elder Abuse convened a National Summit on Elder Abuse to explore ways to more effectively protect America's most vulnerable elders and to work toward a national consensus to action.

The Summit brought together state and local public officials, national advocates, and experts from across the United States representing law enforcement, aging services networks, public health, adult protection, healthcare, mental health, criminal justice, and the research community.

Dedicated to the memory of Dr. Rosalie Wolf, a world-renowned expert and founder of the National Committee for the Prevention of Elder Abuse, the Summit concluded with participants offering a national action agenda to assure our elders a life of safety. The agenda covers:

  • Service gaps
  • Public education about elder abuse
  • Professional training
  • Adult protective services
  • Prosecution
  • Maximizing resources
  • Policy barriers

Since the Summit in 2001, legislation has been introduced in the US Senate aimed at protecting elders from abuse, neglect, and exploitation.

Support for the Summit was provided by the US Administration on Aging and the US Department of Justice, Office for Victims of Crime.
